SCORES of Islanders gathered in Ryde for the arrival of the Commonwealth Games' Queen's Baton yesterday evening (Wednesday).

The baton itself was brought to our shores by Nicholas Early, of Shorwell.

The 20-year-old, who works at Wight Mountain bicycle shop, was nominated out of 8,000 candidates to carry the baton.

Nicolas, who beat cancer twice, and underwent a stem cell transplant back in October, 2019, described it as an honour.

Together with his brother, Matthew, he cycled from Scotland to the Isle of Wight last year.

Arriving at the Hovertravel landing pad, he was greeted by Islanders and stopped to take pictures and chat.

The baton was supposed to then be taken to the Waterside Pool, and stop at the Grade II listed Appley Tower, but those plans were scuppered due to delays to the journey.

Among those in attendance was MP Bob Seely, IW Council leader Lora Peacey-Wilcox, and Ryde mayor Michael Lilley.
