TODAY is a special day on the Isle of Wight events calendar — Armed Forces Day — which will feature a parade and ceremony.

Starting at 11.15am this morning (Saturday), bands, service personnel, veterans and cadets will march from the Drill Hall to the Quay, in Newport, where a salute will be taken.

The chair of the Isle of Wight Council, Cllr Claire Critchison, will attend, along with the county's Royal British Legion (RBL) chaplain, who will perform a blessing.

Events and entertainment will run until a closing ceremony, scheduled for 2.30pm, which will conclude with a hymn and the National Anthem.

Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Ian Dore, said: "Traditionally, over the years, the Isle of Wight's Armed Forces Day has been superb.

"This will serve as the foundation on which to take it to new heights over the coming years."
