Budding young scientists and aviators will have the chance to win a flight around the Island at this week's Noel Turner Science Festival.

The festival is returning to the Isle of Wight after two years and will be held on Thursday and Friday at Cowes Enterprise College.

As part of the fun and education, the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) IoW Branch will be offering the chance to pilot a flight simulator, see a working jet engine and win a flight around the Island.

The RAeS stand will have a couple of flight simulators and a virtual reality flight simulator headset that students can try on, as well as two working jet engines models for the pupils to inspect.

The RAeS IoW Branch Committee have also organised a competition for all the pupils attending the festival to enter.

The students will be asked to guess the number of turbine blades contained in two jet engine models and two lucky winners will be given a flight in a Socata TB 10 Tobago four-seater light aircraft belonging to one of the committee members, who has generously offered to fly the winners around the Island.

The flights will take-off and land at the Isle of Wight/Sandown Airport and it has waived their airport fees for the competition flights at date to be agreed.

The two winning youngsters can be accompanied by either a parent or teacher.

The branch has also arranged for Antony Quinn, the CEO of Maverick Aviation based at Lee-on-the-Solent, to attend the fFestival with one of the world’s first next generation hands-free jet-packs.

Antony will be giving talks to groups of pupils and showing them the workings of the jet pack – but unfortunately will not be flying in it.

The RAeS branch hold regular free talks on a variety of topics associated with the aero-space industry and on Thurssday evening, Antony will be giving a talk on the jet packs at the Isle of Wight College at 6pm.

These talks are well attended, normally held on the third Thursday on most months during the year and valid for endorsed CEng, I.Eng & EngTech continuing professional development attendance certificates.
