AFTER his first night at Liphook, Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary has been told Rupert is 'doing well so far' after his emergency rush to hospital.

The Sanctuary posted an appeal on its Facebook page yesterday (Monday, June 20) after one of its donkeys was found to have severe colic, which could be fatal.

Due to Festival-goers heading home after the weekend and issues with cross-Solent travel, staff were concerned that Rupert might not make it to Liphook Equine Hospital to receive emergency treatment.

Thankfully, a space was found, and Rupert was transported to the hospital, where he remains this evening (Tuesday, June 21).

Rupert joined the Sanctuary early in 2020 along with his mother, Frida, after living together in the Dordogne region of France until their owner died.

They were rescued by the Flicka Foundation in Cornwall and brought to the UK.

The Flicka Foundation were full at the time and asked for the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary's help, who were delighted to offer them both a home.

Rupert is in a stable condition and is being continuously observed, in expert hands.

A spokesperson from Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary said: "So far, we have been able to avoid the emergency surgery, and we are hopeful we can keep it that way, but only time will tell.

"We still cannot express our thanks to you all enough.

"The reason that he is doing so well is because we were able to get him there in time.

"The way the community came together to help and support one of our donkeys is amazing and truly heartwarming."

The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary will update its Facebook page when further feedback Rupert's condition is given.
