West Wight Heritage Centre has been decorated with bunting and photographs to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee — and you have still got time to see it because it will be on view throughout June.

The heritage centre, situated in Avenue Road, Freshwater, is the home of the Freshwater and Totland Archive Group and members of the group set up the display during May, so it was also in place for the jubilee weekend.

There are numerous images from the coronation, as well as some of the various visits from members of the royal family to the Isle of Wight.

Also featured are photographs of past local jubilee celebrations, such as those that took place at Freshwater Bay in 2012.

On one wall there is a display of photographs of local carnival queens from the 1950s, to tie in with the Queen’s coronation.

West Wight residents have also loaned items of memorabilia to enhance the display, such as a coronation mug, spoons, coins and a commemorative New Testament.

The heritage centre has taken its work on tour locally too.

The above photo was taken at an event organised by the Freshwater Parish Council on Jubilee Field, Freshwater, on Friday, June 3.

The West Wight Heritage Centre had a stand at the event displaying many more photos.

The vice Lord-Lieutenant, Brigadier Maurice Sheen, opened the event and spent some time looking around.

He stopped at the heritage centre’s stand and was very interested in some albums of old photos.

The centre is usually open weekday mornings (except Tuesdays) from 10am to noon.

The archive group would welcome new volunteers to assist in the many aspects of the work they carry out.
