A NEWPORT man resisted five police officers during a struggle at his ex-partner's house after a fight with his son.

Paul Bennett, care of an address on Fairmount Drive, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old admitted obstructing/resisting five police constables in the execution of their duty, in Newport, on May 29.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court that at approximately 2am, police were called to an address on Fairmount Drive, after receiving reports of a father and son fighting.

Ms Smout said, when police arrived, the pair were found with blood on them, and the father — Bennett — was arrested on suspicion of ABH.

She said he immediately resisted, and incapacitant spray was deployed to help the five officers trying to safely arrest him.

The court heard he was taken to the floor but continued to resist arrest.

Incapacitant spray was deployed a second time before he was removed from the address.

No injuries were caused to the officers, and Bennett gave no comment answers in police interview.

Ms Smout said he was last in court back in March of this year for a drunk and disorderly charge.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Bennett was visiting his ex-partner's address to see his 23-year-old son.

He said Bennett admitted there had been a verbal disagreement between the pair which escalated into a physical confrontation.

Mr Vincent said the two soon settled their differences and the confrontation dissipated.

The court heard Bennett's ex-partner had called police to report the incident, but when it quickly fizzled out, she called again to tell them the situation had sorted itself out.

Mr Vincent said police arrived to everyone's surprise and matters escalated.

Bennett was fined £80 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
