Open gardens are as much about marvelling and applauding effort and creativity and gleaning ideas, as the social element, with like-minded enthusiasts.

One such event takes place in Carisbrooke on the Isle of Wight tomorrow (Sunday, June 12) between 11am and 5pm.

There are four tried-and-tested favourites and seven new gardens to look around.

Organiser, Louise Killpack, said: “Mostly, we’re doing it as a community venture — to bring people together for an enjoyable local day out.

"I have met so many lovely and interesting local people by opening my garden — who I now say hello to every time I pass them in the village!”

Delicious teas will be served at the village hall, and there will be plants for sale. Proceeds are for upkeep of St Mary’s Church, Carisbrooke.

Tickets are £5, available from Carisbrooke Village Hall, or at the free car park at Carisbrooke Health Centre.
