A 12-year-old girl stuck in mud in the River Medina led to several emergency services rushing to her aid this evening (Monday).

HM Coastguard's Bembridge and Ventnor Rescue Teams rushed to the scene, between Island Harbour and the Folly in Whippingham, at 4.40pm.

Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were also present.

Cowes RNLI lifeboat was launched at 5.02pm to assist.

The girl had been waist-deep in the off-shore mud for over an hour and was getting increasingly cold.

She was rescued by fire crews using specialist inflatable equipment.

Ambulance crews took her to St Mary’s Hospital for a thorough check-up.
