A NEWPORT man who mounted the kerb and almost crashed into a wall in Shanklin has been sentenced for drink driving.

Hayden Sutton, of Squirrel Close, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old admitted drink driving in Shanklin, on April 30.

Prosecutor, Rhys Evans, told the court Sutton had been observed by police driving through Shanklin town at approximately 1.40am.

He said he subtly drifted in the carriageway before inexplicably mounting a kerb and nearly crashing into a wall.

Mr Evans said the car corrected itself and Sutton was pulled over.

In police custody, he registered a breath-alcohol reading of 61 when the legal limit is 35.

The court heard Sutton had no previous convictions and held a clean driving licence.

Henry Farley, defending, said Sutton pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and was ashamed to find himself in court.

He said Sutton was refreshingly free from the desire to blame others or make silly excuses.

The court heard he had been out with friends and made the stupid decision to drive home.

Magistrates told Sutton he was lucky not to hit anyone and disqualified him from driving for 17 months.

He was fined £230 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
