A SHANKLIN woman caught stealing from Sainsbury's and drink driving just four days later has been sentenced.

Angie Holroyd, of Queens Road, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old admitted drink-driving in Newport, on April 28, and theft from a shop in Newport, on April 24.

Prosecutor, Rhys Evans, told the court Holroyd had entered Sainsbury's at approximately 3.50pm and was observed by security staff as she passed the barriers and set off the alarms.

He said she was detained and a bag full of items to the value of £213.50 was discovered, and she immediately accepted she had stolen them.

All the items were returned to the store and no application for compensation was sought.

Mr Evans said four days later, Holroyd was stopped while driving along Foxes Road in Newport.

He said she had been driving erratically, and was seen to drive on the wrong side of the road while passing over a zebra crossing.

Mr Evans said she failed a roadside breath test, registering a reading of 62 when the legal limit is 35.

The court heard Holroyd was lightly convicted, with her last motoring offence the best part of 20 years ago.

Barry Keel, defending, said Holroyd — a mother — pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and appeared to panic when challenged in Sainsbury's.

He said she had already reached out for guidance and support, and was suffering from depression and other illness.

The court heard Holroyd's actions had been out of character, and she was trying to sort her life out.

Holroyd was disqualified from driving for 17 months and was offered a drink driving rehabilitation course.

She was fined £200 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
