A RYDE man who crashed into a row of bollards, only to continue driving while over the drink-drive limit, has been sentenced.

Jason Stone, of Ashey Road, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old had initially denied drink driving in Ryde, on December 21, 2021, raising concerns about the way his alcohol-breath test had been conducted.

On further research, Barry Keel, defending, said it became clear Stone had no defence to the charge and a guilty plea was entered.

Prosecutor, Rhys Evans, told the court Stone's car had been observed by police driving along St John's Hill in Ryde.

He said he failed to stop at a red light, was followed by police, and eventually sped up, making a sharp left turn on the High Street and crashing into a row of bollards.

Mr Evans said Stone continued on, and was stopped by police further up the High Street.

Stone registered a breath-alcohol reading of 82 when the legal limit is 35.

Mr Keel said Stone had been suffering with mental and physical health problems at the time.

He said he previously worked as a plasterer, but had difficulties with mobility and needed a back operation.

Stone was disqualified from driving for 21 months.

He was fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
