On May 4, Cowes commemorated the 80th anniversary of the German air raid on Cowes that killed 70 residents, and the heroism of the Polish navy that prevented even more damage.

The Blyskawica had been built at East Cowes and returned in 1942 for a refit.

Its heroic defence of Cowes is well commemorated at Francki Place, and in commemorative plaques.

Ann Arnold, originally from York Street, Cowes, travelled to Poland for a friend's wedding.

Gdynia is a naval port and — quite by chance — Ann and her friend visited the port where ships of the Polish Navy were docked.

There was the Blyskawica — preserved as a museum ship 80 years after its defence of Cowes — the birthplace of Ann and this heroic ship.

It was a very surprising and unexpected meeting.
