MORE than 4,000 people made the most of the sunny weather when they descended on Newport Quay for the annual Riverfest.

Today's free event (Saturday), run for the first time by Newport Carnival and Community Events Association, began with the spectacle of music on the march from the Medina Marching Band and the Vectis Corps of Drums from St Thomas's Square.

Along the quayside were charity stalls and many other stands run by marine and community organisations, conservation groups, vintage vehicle groups and many others.

The event featured the Pirates' Parade, which also started from St Thomas's Square, a Viking battle reinactment, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and even Dr Who's Tardis.
