A DRUG driver stayed at the scene after hitting an elderly woman who stepped out in front of him.

The Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court heard that Max Vines "did all the right things" after the collision by staying at the scene and helping out with enquiries.

However, on being tested for drink and drugs, he was found to be over the limit for Benzoylecgonine - a cocaine derivative.

Graham Heath, prosecuting on Friday, said there didn't seem to be any indication Vines, 22, was impaired by the drug, but the fact there was a collision was an aggravating factor.

Oscar Vincent, representing Vines, said: "He had not taken cocaine or any substances that day, it was beforehand, and he reassures me he felt perfectly OK to drive.

"He was emphatic he was not speeding, didn't cut the corner, but the elderly lady stepped out in front of him and there was a connection between his vehicle and the old lady."

He said Vines was in a distressed state but stopped to help the woman and was fully co-operative with all the procedures.

Vines, an apprentice carpenter, of Sunnyhill Close, Sandown, was banned from driving for one year, fined £350 and must pay £85 costs and a £35 surcharge.
