Walk the Wight returns on Sunday (May 8) raising vital funds for the Isle of Wight's Mountbatten.

There are a host of walks to take part in and it is not too late to sign up - you can do it on the big day, at any of the starting points.

Mountbatten provides crucial outreach and hospice services, at its base in Newport and across the Island. Most of us on the Isle of Wight know someone who has relied on its team, or received care from them.

It costs over £9m every year to keep Mountbatten running and Walk the Wight is the organisation's major annual fundraiser.

How can I Walk the Wight on the Isle of Wight for Mountbatten?

An eight mile flat walk, between Sandown and Shide, Newport is one of the options available to walkers. Start between 8.30am and 10.30am, at Sandown Bay CE, on The Fairway.

Meanwhile, many will take on the full challenge - 26 miles. Start at Bembridge Airport, between 6am and 8am.

If that feels like a stretch too far, you can start at Bembridge Airport and finish at Carisbrooke Castle.

Alternatively, start at Carisbrooke Castle, between 8am and 12pm, and finish at Alum Bay.

This year, a new walk, called The Final Stretch, has been added. It covers the final four miles of the main route, over Tennyson Down to Alum Bay. Start at Freshwater Bay between 11am and 1pm.

Others have opted to take on the virtual walk and families might be completing the schools' walk.

There is also a fancy-dress competition - with a family ticket to Camp Bestival up for grabs.

Are you walking the Wight tomorrow?

The charity says fewer people had signed up in advance this year, so it is urging us to take part on the day instead.

If you have left it till the last minute, you can register at any start point, in return for a donation.

Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten CEO, said: “We cannot stress how important it is people take part in Walk the Wight this year more than ever.

“We are desperately trying to recover after two very challenging years, and we need our community to help us get there.

“Whether it is walking for fun, a challenge, or in memory of a loved one, please come and join us on Sunday, May 8.

“Whether you raise thousands or simply give us a small donation, it all helps us continue to be there for Islanders when they need us most.”
