Barclays Bank has announced it is to close its Ryde branch...leaving the Isle of Wight with just one branch.

The Newport centre will be the only one left when Barclay's closes its branch at 7-8 High Street on August 4.

In a statement on its website, Barclays says its reasons for closure are that its counter transactions have decreased in the last two years and 84 per cent of its customers at Ryde now use alternative ways to bank.

It claims only 78 customers used the branch exclusively for banking with many choosing other branches.

In July 2021, the Isle of Wight County Press reported changes Barclays was making to its business banking model although no mention was made at that time of branch closures.

In 2017, Barclays closed its Shanklin branch.
