NUMBER one album stars Wet Leg have paid tribute to everyone on the Isle of Wight who has supported them and played their music.

Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers wanted to thank everyone who believed in them.

Their number one album, the eponymous Wet Leg, sold more vinyl copies in week one than any other album released in the past 30 years.

As well as smashing straight in at No.1 on the UK Official Album Chart, it also went straight in at No.1 on the ARIA Australian Album Chart too.

It is the first time an IW act has scored a No.1 UK album, despite the success of Level 42 in the 1980s and The Bees in the 2000s.

Rhian and Hester from Wet Leg thank the Isle of Wight

Rhian and Hester said: "It’s all been a complete whirlwind. Just over a year ago we awkwardly crab-walked into the studio with a Dropbox full of scuzzy demos, catching ourselves wondering if we were even capable of making an album?

"Carefully we acknowledged and swiftly discarded these thoughts of self-doubt and waded on into album land, shepherded by our very good friend, esteemed producer, Dan Carey.

"We’re very proud of the album we made, regardless of where it has placed in the album charts.

"It’s been such an unexpected journey for us, a bunch of pals from the Isle of Wight, so if we are honest, to have it place as No. 1 in the first week of it being released has left us in total bewilderment.

“Basically a big old bucket of love and gratitude is due to all you lovely people on the Isle that have been holding our hands along the way.

"Thank you to those who bought the album, streamed the album, played a song of ours to their captive friends on a long car journey.

"Thanks to everyone who has crossed the water to come to a show. Thanks to everyone that has shouted “WHAT?!!!!” Back to us after each “excuse me?” at a gig.

"Thanks to everyone who has come to a show wearing lobster claws on their hands and straw hats and mops on their heads.

"Thanks to everyone for believing in us even before we did! Life is a funny old thing and we feel so much gratitude to you guys for supporting us and allowing us to play music with our friends every night.

"Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for joining us on this crazy wave and getting us to Number Freakin’ One!!”
