UPGRADES are proposed to a lifeguard station on Ryde beach that will hopefully improve response time to incidents.

Plans submitted by Ryde Town Council, to the Isle of Wight Council, set out a series of works to the station, next to the Big Kahuna Beach Cafe, on Ryde's North Walk.

A new external staircase and an extension to the roof observation platform are proposed as the town council looks to comply with building regulations.

Currently, the viewing platform, overlooking The Solent, is accessed by a steep, non-compliant, internal staircase with access to the roof through a trap door, which, left open, is a danger to anyone on the platform.

In planning documents, the town council says by moving the staircase outside, it would free up much-needed space indoors to the benefit of the lifeguards — with more space to treat patients, reducing the possibility of injury and improving response times.

Double sliding doors would replace the window in the station, which currently does not give good visibility of the beach to someone sitting down inside it.

By adding doors, the town council say it will also improve casualty handling and access to the building.

A larger observation area, it says, will give lifeguards more flexibility as it would cover the whole roof.
