A WOMAN has been arrested following an attack on a pensioner in Newport.

Police were called to an incident at Isobel Park, Furrlongs, at Pan, Newport, at 6.43pm last night (Friday). 

A woman, aged 72, from Newport, was seriously assaulted at the park.

The pensioner was approached by a woman and attacked, receiving a minor injury to her neck.

Isle of Wight County Press: The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service took the assaulted pensioner to St Mary's Hospital, Newport. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service took the assaulted pensioner to St Mary's Hospital, Newport.

She was taken by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, for treatment, but has since been discharged.

Officers arrested a 28-year-old woman from Newport shortly after their arrival on suspicion of assaulting a person, thereby inflicting actual bodily harm and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police cordoned off the area while they investigated the incdent throughout the evening.

The woman arrested remains in police custody at the current time.
