UNDERMOUNT Lodge is an exquisite period home which has been extensively refurbished and is located at the foot of Bonchurch Shute, within minutes of the beach.

This historic Grade II-listed property was built in 1857 by Sir John and Lady Elizabeth Pringle.

The couple had occupied Undermount, a large manor house beyond the lodge, since 1851, and the Pringles had close family connections to Queen Victoria whose famous Isle of Wight residence was Osborne House in East Cowes.

In the 1850s, the Pringles hoped Queen Victoria would find time to visit, so they chose to carve an access tunnel through the cliff to allow the queen a more private entrance. Sadly Queen Victoria never visited.

Over the years, the property fell into state of disrepair, but thankfully was purchased by an owner with an interest in history.

Refurbished throughout over a two-year period, the beautiful detached lodge now provides two bathrooms, two bedrooms, an attractive cottage kitchen and an adjacent utility room.

Undermount Lodge may serve well as a second home or holiday let, with its low-maintenance courtyard garden, or as an inspirational character dwelling for someone of a creative nature - Bonchurch has been home to many writers and artists in the past, including the poet Algernon Charles Swinburne, who grew up at East Dene.

Entry is via an entrance hall with period tiling, while the lovely triple-aspect sitting room has cast iron leaded windows overlooking Bonchurch Village Road and an attractive period fireplace with an inset gas coal-effect fire.

The kitchen is a spacious room fitted with bespoke units, an eyelevel plate rack and a fitted dresser.

There is an attractive period tiled floor, a range-style gas cooker, a cast iron leaded window overlooking the side courtyard and ample space for a dining table.

There is also a handy utility room with space for a washing machine and tumble dryer.

The shower room has a shower cubicle, a WC and a wash-basin and fully tiled floor and walls.

Upstairs on the first floor there is a galleried landing with a cast iron leaded window allowing natural light to both the ground floor and first floor.
