A GENEROUS audience donated £1,003 for the people of Ukraine at a performance of the Cantata Choir.

Performing in All Saint’s Church, Ryde, on Saturday (March 5), the choir reached out in two directions for its first concert of the year — to the beleaguered people of Ukraine, and to the young musicians of the Island.

Geoff Kirk described a new bursary scheme to benefit talented young musicians.

During an interlude between the choir’s two pieces, 17-year-old classical guitarist Thomas Nash demonstrated the sort of skill that future beneficiaries of the scheme might share.

He began his selection of three pieces with variations from Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Tressa Lambert performed three songs, accompanied by Richard Wilkins, Cantata’s pianist.

Under the baton of musical director Rachel Tweddle, the choir began with Songs My Heart Has Taught Me by Bob Chilcott, Am I Too Comic . . Too Old or Too Bold or Too Vain?, with profound insights, When the Lives We Weave are in Unison, and All Will Be Safe, All Will Be Calm.

In the second half, John Rutter’s Magnificat reflected hope and love, with the pure voice of guest soprano soloist Tressa Lambert floating over the harmony of the choir.
