The Island's taxi fares could rise in response to rising fuel and running costs.

Taxi drivers and owners asked for an increase in tariffs during an Isle of Wight Council consultation in November.

A meeting is being held today (Monday), which could hit the pockets of Islanders who use cabs.

A report going before the Isle of Wight Council says a two-mile journey on the current tariff 1, costs £6.00, which places the Island 182 out of 353 local authority areas.

If the price rise is supported, a two-mile journey on tariff 1, between 8am and10pm, would rise by £1.10.

The cost of a five-mile journey would go up by £2.30 and a ten-mile journey would cost £4.30 more.

A single set of tariffs was reviewed in 2019 and the last major change was in 2014.

The report notes concern that the rise is 'significant' but says it recommending members of the Licensing Committee start a consultation, with a possible price rise in May.

The meeting takes place today, at 4pm.
