The Balcony nightclub in Ryde has proved to be a top place to party on the Isle of Wight during the 1990s, 2000s and in more recent years.

I recently found a County Press advert for the club’s grand opening with Dave Berry and The Cruisers in July 1992 while browsing in the newspaper archive.

This started me thinking about the other stars who have appeared at the club, including Dave Wakeling of The Beat in 2017 and Simon Townshend — brother of Pete Townshend of The Who — in 2012.

The Balcony has always been known for great party nights throughout the year too — think Valentine’s Day, Diwali, Halloween and Christmas parties to name but a few seasonal celebrations.

Plenty of Isle of Wight women have had their hen night celebrations at The Balcony — and I’m sure there have been lots of stag-dos too.

Perhaps you remember the late Fred Whittingham, who partied at The Balcony well into his golden years?

Fred was a regular at The Balcony and even celebrated his 90th birthday in style there in 2005.

The Balcony Bar is also famous for hosting the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally and Isle of Wight Lambretta Day musical events, with performers including The 45s and The Skatonics, and tribute bands such as The Style Councillors and Maybe Oasis.
