A SANDOWN man has been sentenced for banging his fiancee's head against a wall.
Andrew Coward, of Fort Street, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Friday (January 7).
The 49-year-old admitted assault by beating in Sandown, on December 4, 2021.
Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court CCTV footage showed a dispute between Coward and his fiancee.
She said the victim was seen to strike Coward across the face first, and as the pair walked along a corridor, Coward banged her head against a wall.
The court heard Coward had a number of previous convictions — his most recent assault back in 2020.
Ms Miller told the bench Coward and the victim had both been in drink.
Amy Hossell, defending, said the pair had been in a room together, drinking, prior to the offence.
She said Coward — an alcoholic suffering from ADHD, depression and anxiety — had a lot of recent injuries to his face, and being hit caused him to act out.
Ms Hossell said Coward pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and it was an alcohol-fuelled case of tit for tat.
Coward, who had already amassed a number of outstanding court fines, was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £22 surcharge.
