THE response by police to the scene of an alleged murder in Ryde has been referred to an independent watchdog.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire Constabulary said officers attended the George Street property twice, once in the early hours of Tuesday morning then again in the afternoon when a body was found.

A man in his 30s was found dead.

The spokesperson said: "We can confirm that police attended the address in George Street, Ryde, at approximately 2.50am on Tuesday, January 4.

"The circumstances surrounding our response to this incident have been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC)."

It followed concerns expressed on social media by the public after rumours the police hadn't responded for 12 hours.

Earlier today, neighbours told the County Press they didn't hear or see anything untoward until police arrived at the scene in the afternoon.

A 38-year-old man is currently in custody after being arrested on suspicion of murder.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting Operation Amaryllis or 44220003393.
