CCTV footage and DNA results were used to pin a man to a burglary at a Newport shop — after he smashed his head and a brick against the front door and cut himself gaining entry.

Lewis Morera-Morgan, of Parkhurst Road, appeared before Isle of Wight Magistrates via video link yesterday (Tuesday).

The 21-year-old, currently a serving prisoner, admitted burglary in Newport, on July 27, 2021.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court Morera-Morgan had burgled Central Convenience Store on Gunville Road at approximately 12.34am.

She said the store had been closed, locked and unoccupied, and CCTV covered the entirety of the offence.

Ms Miller said Morera-Morgan initially struck the door with his face, then threw a brick through a glass pane, creating a small hole.

The court heard Morera-Morgan then enlarged the hole with his hand and body and climbed through, attempting to wipe the door frame before walking in.

Ms Miller said he targeted a display of spirits and took a number of bottles of vodka, leaving through the same entry point.

Staff attended later that morning and reported the matter to police, with the stolen items valued at £407.98.

Blood was found on the door, floor and shelving, and DNA results led to Morera-Morgan.

Ms Miller told the court Morera-Morgan had been given a 23-month prison term in December for a number of offences, and he was also drunk and on a two-year conditional discharge at the time of the offence.

Jim Osborne, defending, said Morera-Morgan had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and was fully co-operative with police.

He said he was very drunk and in a really bad place at the time.

Morera-Morgan was given a ten-week prison term, consecutive to his current sentence.

Compensation and court costs were waived.
