MORE than 200 braved appalling weather to take part in the seventh edition of The Abominable Snowman Tough 10 in Shorwell.

At Cheverton Farm, runners could do either the 10km or ten-mile races, plus there was a free-to-enter Mini Snowman for children.

Living up to the ‘abominable’ name, heavy rainfall in the days leading up to the event created extremely challenging conditions on the tough course, which comprised farm tracks, woodland paths and open downland.

First up were the Mini Snowman runners, who braved the worst of the weather — racing over the first and last sections of the adult route — a muddy, hilly 1km course.

There were excellent efforts — all deserving their finisher’s medal and sweets.

More than 70 runners lined up for the ten-mile start line, with more than 130 then competing in the 10km start line — made wider to allow for social distancing.

Competitors climbed from the start in the valley to the top of Limerstone Down, taking in punishing climbs along the way, before heading towards Brighstone Forest, with more climbs and descents before arriving at the pirate bar themed water stop.

At this point the course split, with ten-milers on a loop through ancient woodland, up the Tennyson Trail and a steep, grassy hill before descending to the finish.

First home in the ten-mile was Joe Driscoll, in 1hr 17mins 28secs, beating Adam Tuck by a second, while Holly Newton put in a strong performance to win the women’s event in 1.29.28 and sixth overall, beating Charis Jones by more than five seconds.

In the 10km, Ben Douglas was first to cross the line, in 45.22, with Ross Wilkes (51.102) in second, while Jurgita Bates (1.07.35) was first woman, beating Amy Chambers (1.08.21) into second.

One of the event’s organisers, Gareth Shilton, of GP Sport, said: “After having to cancel last year, it was great to be back.

“The Abominable Snowman is renowned for being one of the toughest cross-country races on the calendar and this year the weather, combined with an updated course lay-out, really helped the event live up to expectations.

“The challenging conditions couldn’t dampen the spirits of the competitors, who produced some excellent performances.”
