A MAN has been charged following a serious assault in Ryde on Christmas Eve ­— one which was initially viewed as a potential attempted murder case.

On Christmas Day, a man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, following a vicious attack which left a woman with serious head injuries.

Police had been called to an address on West Street, Ryde, at around 10.20pm the night before.

On their arrival, officers found a woman, aged 42, seriously injured.

The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service took the victim to St Mary's Hospital for treatment.

Jonathan Eldridge, 41, of West Street, Ryde, has since been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

He was remanded in custody, to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Monday, December 27.

There, he was further remanded, to appear before a judge at Portsmouth Crown Court on January 21.

No plea was entered.
