THE New Year's Day celebrations will go ahead in Sandown this evening.

Sandown Carnival is putting on an evening of fun and fireworks, supported by Sandown Town Council and Sandown Pier.

A spectacular firework display will be set off from the end of Sandown Pier at 6pm.

The display will begin with a rainbow style firework sequence in honour of keyworkers who have worked so hard over the past 20 months, organisers said.

There is no entry fee to the event, which can be enjoyed from the entire Esplanade, however it is a fundraiser for the town's carnival committee's future events.

Donations will be gratefully appreciated, and volunteers will be positioned along the Esplanade with collection buckets.

Those who cannot attend, but would like to donate, can do so online at www.sandowncarnival.com/donate

Organisers said: "We do encourage everyone to take sensible Covid measures, such as keeping a safe distance from others, washing hands before and after attending and of course not attending if you have any Covid symptoms."

They are looking for volunteers to help on the night to collect donations before, during and after the display, for around one-and-a-half hours. If you can help, contact the committee via its Facebook page.
