A MAN consumed a cocktail of rum, butane gas and snorted prescription medicine before threatening a care worker in the street with an axe.

Tomas Daniel Bateman, 31, was jailed for his actions at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Wednesday, after admitting common assault and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

He was jailed for two years, although will serve half on licence.

As previously reported by the County Press, he randomly approached a care worker outside a residential home in Freshwater, who was about to drive home after her shift.

He was wielding an axe and the woman ran back to the home in terror — banging on the door to be let in.

As he waved the weapon, Bateman said to her: "I'm going to get you, lady."

Oscar Vincent, for Bateman, said after consuming his cocktail of alcohol, gas and drugs, he was left with little or no recollection of what he had done, but was apologetic once he had sobered up.

The offences put Bateman in breach of a suspended sentence order (SSO).

In September, Bateman received 12-months' probation, with a restraining order and a nine-month alcohol treatment order, for sending an offensive text.

In April, Bateman was jailed after flouting a SSO by hurling a plant pot through a neighbour's car window.

The SSO was made for assaulting his mother, waving a sex toy at an elderly woman, growing cannabis and setting fire to rubbish outside a neighbour's door.
