A SANDOWN man who illegally drove a car and gave false details to police has since been sentenced for drug driving.

Kye Malin, of Stower Place, appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates on Tuesday (December 7).

The 32-year-old admitted drug driving in Ventnor, on June 25, 2021.

At a previous hearing on July 13, Malin faced charges of using a motor vehicle without insurance and driving without a valid licence.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court that at around 4.30pm, an officer had been driving an unmarked police vehicle on Newport Road.

Police were conducting a search for a wanted male in the area, and drove past a Volkswagen Golf, whose driver resembled the suspect.

The vehicle was stopped and it was established Malin was not the man they were looking for, but checks were carried out on the vehicle.

Mrs Smout said Malin initially gave his name to the police officer as Tyrone Barry, protesting his innocence and claiming to be insured on another vehicle.

At the police station, he confessed he'd given false details, confirming he had no insurance and an expired provisional licence.

The court heard police took a sample of blood and Malin was found to have 3.5 micrograms of drug per litre of blood, exceeding the specified limit.

Barry Arnett, defending, said Malin was naive and had smoked cannabis on the Sunday prior to his arrest, not understanding it would still be in his system.

He said there was no element of bad driving.

Malin was disqualified from driving for 12 months, fined £120 and ordered to pay a £34 surcharge.
