RESIDENTS living in a residential street in Sandown this morning (Saturday) were awoken by the sound of a car's collision into parked vehicles.

Police are seeking the driver of a blue convertible Volkswagen Beetle who crashed into parked cars in Albert Road just after 5am.

Two people, thought to be a man and a woman, fled the scene.

The airbags in the Beetle had gone off.

A Mini, a Subaru Impreza and a Peugeot 307 were all damaged by the Beetle driver in the collision.

The blue Mini, pictured, took the blunt of the collision — shunted at right angles from its parking position and into a garden wall, blocking the pavement.

Police closed Albert Road, with the junction of Station Avenue, while they investigated the incident and to allow recovery of the Beetle.

A police spokesman said: "We are now investigating the circumstances that led to the crash. No arrests have been made at this stage.

"Anyone with information about the incident, who hasn't already spoken to our officers, is asked to call PC Thomas Marsden at Newport Police Station on 101, quoting the crime reference number 44210486190.
