A NEWPORT woman was caught on CCTV piling up gift sets in her arms and walking out without paying.

Rachel Hewitt, of Angelica Grove, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court .

The 38-year-old admitted theft from a the B&M shop in Newport, on October 15.

Prosecutor, Ann Smout, told the court Hewitt had entered B&M at approximately 2.30pm and selected a number of Revelation gift sets, valued at £227.95.

She piled them up in her arms and left the shop, making no attempt to pay.

Mrs Smout said Hewitt walked out without hiding them, and was identified via CCTV.

Barry Arnett, defending, said he had known Hewitt for 21 years and said it was sad to see how she was today.

He said she was a mother of three children, and her downfall started when they were taken away from her in 2019.

Mr Arnett said Hewitt started using heroin again, and was struggling with other issues.

He said the consequences of injecting has been catastrophic, and Hewitt was now suffering from deep-vein thrombosis in one of her legs.

The court heard Hewitt couldn't recall the offence at all and was not proud of the way she was at the moment.

Hewitt was fined £120, and ordered to pay £227.95 compensation to B&M.

She was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
