ONE of the Isle of Wight's signs that Christmas is coming is when Terry Ramplin turns on the spectacular lights at his Long Lane home.

This year, the big switch on will be next Saturday (November 27) when Santa and the Vectis Corps of Drums will join the fantastic fundraiser to illuminate the Newport night.

This year the two charities set to benefit from the thousands of bright bulbs and set pieces are Daisy Chains IW and the IW Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Over the 22 years Terry has been turning on the lights, he has raised more than £35,000 for charities from Mountbatten to the air ambulance and Ability Dogs for Young People.

Terry said: "The prostate cancer group is very worthy of support because men are not great at getting themselves tested."

He added that Daisy Chains IW was picked as it helps families of young people with long-term illnesses.

Terry said: "I hope Islanders will put money in the buckets to support these great charities over the Christmas period.

"We will be turning the lights on at 6pm on the 27th and hope people will come along to enjoy a mince pie or sausage roll."
