THE NEW Year's Day fireworks in Sandown has been financially supported by the town council.

Councillors recently confirmed its commitment to supporting Sandown Carnival's plans for the event, putting £6,000 towards it.

They also started discussions about the 2022 programme of events.

Sandown Mayor, Paddy Lightfoot, said: "The town council appreciates the work of volunteers, and it has been a challenging time during Covid and the impact it had a on fundraising, and we wanted to ensure the association had funding in place to support this much loved event."

The council has also invested in decorative lighting, planned to be in place by Christmas.
