Plans for a community arts space in East Cowes's former library are moving forwards.

An exciting new project called Phoenix Arts is aiming for an artist-in-residence, a hot-desking work space, a performance area, a cafe and a space for community groups to meet.

Split over three floors, the York Avenue building has variously been a post office, police station and home to an escape room business.

It has been empty since the hundreds of books and volunteer library staff moved to an annex next to the town hall.

Isle of Wight County Press: East Cowes's former library building is destined to be a multi-use arts space.

Work is now underway create a new, purpose-built library on that site.

Meanwhile, the man behind the transformation of the former library, Michael Paler, told the County Press he had secured funding and has already spoken with similar organisations on the Isle of Wight.

Refurbishment work has seen cracks in the walls repaired, heat pumps installs and new paintwork.

The building features multiple bathrooms, kitchens and large spacious rooms and Mr Paler has plans for a living wall to brighten up the outside space.

He has salvaged some of the original library shelving and the reception desk, for use in the new space and on other projects.
