QUICK thinking staff put out a fire in a bathroom at Seven Acres Mental Health Unit this afternoon (Wednesday).

Several fire units were initially sent to the apartments behind St Mary's Hospital but all were turned back on route except one appliance from Newport Fire Station, after a call came through to say the fire had been extinguished by staff.

The firefighters helped to clear smoke from the bathroom, which was attached to a bedroom at the unit.

A spokesperson from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said it was a small fire and there were no casualties.

The initial 999 call came in at 5.23pm and the stop message was reported at 5.45pm.
