AN ALVERSTONE man who stole a soundbar to finance his drug addiction was found in breach of a conditional discharge.

Michael Phillips, of Burnt House Lane, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The 38-year-old admitted theft from a shop in Newport, on July 1.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court Phillips had entered Sainbury's and picked up a soundbar valued at £100.

She said he left without attempting to pay, and was later identified by police via CCTV.

Ms Miller said the goods were not recovered, but Phillips — in breach of a conditional discharge — had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said the offence was three months old and Phillips had made remarkable progress since.

He said Phillips stole the sound bar to finance drugs, but his lifestyle was now completely different and he had his head in the right place.

Mr Vincent said Phillips was off controlled substances and had moved well away from his offending group.

Phillips was fined £120 and ordered to pay £100 compensation to Sainsbury's.

He was resentenced for his previous public order offence and ordered to pay a further £60 fine.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
