Firefighters remain in Calbourne this morning (Monday), and Elm Lane remains closed, where a thatched cottage has been on fire overnight.

The fire is now out but some crew members remain, to dampen down and check for hotspots.

They were first called to Elm Lane, after flames and smoke were spotted, just after 7pm on Sunday.

The incident was described as "pretty serious" by a spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

Four pumps, two water carriers and an aerial ladder platform were on the scene and neighbours were asked to keep their doors and windows closed.

The thatch was described as 'well alight' by a County Press reporter at the scene, with the situation hampered by the strong winds.

No-one was hurt, the CP understands.

East Cowes firefighters were among those called out, however the crew returned to the station at around 3:30am.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said, on Sunday night: "Several Island appliances in attendance with assistance from Hampshire main land appliances also.

"This incident is on going and expected to be protracted for several hours."
