ONE of the Isle of Wight's first big casualties of the petrol crisis is Sainsbury's Petrol Station in Newport, who closed this afternoon (Saturday).

With fuel supplies already low earlier this morning, said staff at the station, it was inevitable Sainsbury's would run out — eventually turning away queuing customers from its forecourt and closing at 12.30pm.

A staff member at the station confirmed: "We have unfortunately run out. We are closed until further notice.

"But as soon as a tanker arrives, we will reopen again."

Several UK petrol stations have closed amid a shortage of HGV drivers, stretching some of the country’s vital supply chains close to breaking point.
