A RYDE man was seen swerving from side to side when police arrested him for being almost twice over the drink-drive limit.

Dayle Campbell, of Great Preston Road, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old admitted drink driving and possession of cocaine, on September 4.

Prosecutor, Liam Hunter, told the court at 1am, two police officers on duty had spotted a car being driven erratically, swerving from side to side on Ashey Road, Ryde.

He said the car was pulled over and its driver, Campbell, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

Taken to Newport Police Station, Campbell registered a breath-alcohol reading of 69. The legal limit is 35.

A small quantity of cocaine was found in his possession.

Henry Farley, defending, said Campbell pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and had never drink-drove before.

He said he was ashamed of himself to be back in court — his last appearance in 2012.

Mr Farley said Campbell had turned himself around but was a very occasional user of cocaine.

He said the incident was a wake up call and a source of great shame.

Campbell was fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £40 surcharge.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.
