A SKATE Jam was held to raise funds and awareness for the new 'bigger and better' Freshwater skatepark.

Hamish Fleming pulled the event together to support the growth of the sport, which is now included in the Olympics.

The skate community turned out in force and proceeded to try and dry the ramps using towels and squeegees after a night of heavy rain, and by 11am the event could go ahead.

Hamish said: "Although the turnout was already great, people kept on arriving and the commitment to the new park was tangible.

"We started with mini challenges such as “hippy jump” and “ramp to ramp” with all ages and abilities taking part.

"Passers-by stopped to check it out as there seems to be a new understanding since the Olympics got the world’s attention.

"Further enthusiasm for the new park was demonstrated by the amazing and generous prizes donated from businesses across the Island such as Freshwater Parish Council, Craft Vegan Pizza Ryde, Reaper Surf Co, Teemill, Rapanui, Westwood Signs, Steve Miles Artist, Canopy and Wight Trash."

On the day, £128.25 was raised in donations.

The money will go towards the state-of-the-art skatepark — which will include the Island's first pump track.

Freshwater Parish Council has committed £120,000 over two years towards the project at The Stroud.
