AN 18-YEAR-OLD whose injuries from falling off a Beryl e-scooter led to police suspecting him of drink driving has been banned from the road.

Jasper Firth, of Cambridge Grove, Hammersmith, London, Greater London, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

He admitted drink driving in Shanklin, on August 22.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court two officers had been travelling along Shanklin Esplanade and a Beryl e-scooter had been travelling toward them.

She said the driver of the scooter, Firth, turned around and appeared unsteady on the road.

Ms Miller said officers pulled up alongside the e-scooter and noticed Firth had fresh blood on his face and hands, and a cut to his left knee.

Firth told police he'd fallen off the scooter and cut himself, and admitted he'd consumed some alcohol.

He registered a breath-alcohol reading of 61 at the roadside, and 70 at the police station. The legal limit is 35.

The court heard Firth had no previous convictions.

Mark Dodd, defending, said Firth had visited the Island with friends to celebrate his A-Level results.

He said Firth acknowledged he should not have hired the scooter when in drink, and there was a lesson learned all round when he fell off.

Firth was fined £120 and disqualified from driving for 18 months.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
