A SHORWELL man whose drink driving was tipped off to police by his passenger has been banned from driving.

Jonathan Nash, of Westcourt Close, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday (September 3).

The 57-year-old admitted drink driving in Carisbrooke on August 15, 2021.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court police had received a call from a female telling them she was with Nash and he had been drinking alcohol.

She told police he was about to drive his vehicle to go and buy more alcohol, and she was going with him.

Ms Miller said police were given the details of the vehicle and drove toward Nash's home address in an attempt to locate him.

She said they received a further call from the informant en route, and were directed to the Co-op on Carisbrooke High Street.

The court heard officers spotted the vehicle attempting to exit the car park opposite the shop.

Ms Miller said Nash initially denied consuming any alcohol, but provided a positive roadside breath test and was subsequently arrested.

Nash registered a breath-alcohol reading of 79 when the legal limit is 35.

James Cameron, defending, said Nash pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and accepted he had driven his car after drinking alcohol.

He said, on the day, Nash had been struggling with anxiety and depression — something which had occasionally gotten the better of him over the last five years.

Mr Cameron said jobless Nash recognised the risk of drink driving, and had been engaging with the Inclusion service.

Nash was disqualified from driving for 21 months and fined £120.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
