CITY status, Mission Zero and the D BID 2 support are all items being decided at the Isle of Wight Council's cabinet today, Thursday.

It will be the third time the new cabinet has met since being installed under the Alliance administration in May.

Councillors are also returning after the August recess.

On the agenda for tonight's meeting, could see the adoption of the council's climate and environment strategy 'Mission Zero' 2021 - 2040.

One of the aspirations of the strategy is to have cut all carbon emissions from the council by 2030, school estates by 2030 and net-carbon zero across the whole Island by 2040.

The cabinet will also decide how the last £274,000 of Covid grant funding from the government will be spent.

So far, nearly £100 million has been paid out to Island businesses to support them over the Covid pandemic.

It is also recommended for councillors to support a further D-BID, as current arrangements that deliver a range of tourism promotion activities, run out later this month.

Cabinet will also decide whether to support a motion, submitted by Cllr Martin Oliver, to throw Newport into the national ring to become a city.
