A VENTNOR man told police his foot slipped from his brake onto the accelerator causing him to crash on a busy road.

Ian Phillips, of Trinity Road, was banned from driving when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The 43-year-old admitted drink driving in Ventnor, on August 18, 2021.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court that at around 6.50pm on the day in question, police received calls from several members of the public.

They told officers a male had crashed his car on Ventnor High Street, and when police arrived at the scene, the driver — Phillips — had fled the scene.

Ms Miller said he was later found by police at a nearby family address, where he was arrested for driving while unfit through drink.

A roadside breath test saw Phillips register a breath-alcohol reading of 65, but a reading of 40 at the police station. The legal limit is 35.

Ms Miller said Phillips had previous convictions, but none since 2000.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Phillips' breath-alcohol reading was just at the limit which would have brought him to court.

He said Phillips was a highly vulnerable individual, with mental health difficulties arising primarily from a highly abusive long-term relationship.

Phillips told police he left his home on the day of the incident and drove down Spring Hill.

The court heard he went to brake and his foot slipped from the pedal and onto the accelerator.

Mr Vincent said Phillips turned the wheel, fearing he would hit a pedestrian, which caused the car to roll and land on its roof.

Phillips was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £80.

He was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £34 surcharge.
