There are now more than 30 people in St Mary's Hospital with Covid-19 and the pressure is mounting for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust's medical teams.

The organisation has seen rising numbers of patients with coronavirus in recent weeks.

That number is still going up - although it is not as high as it was during the second wave, over Christmas and the New Year.

Some of those being treated in intensive care have not been vaccinated - leading to a plea from the Isle of Wight's health bosses to get a jab if you have not already done so.

The last official data released by the NHS dated to August 31.

It showed 23 patients with Covid-19 were in hospital and two needed specialist ventilation.

The Trust says a further seven patients now have the virus.

Steve Parker, medical director at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: "We are definitely feeling the impact of the rise in cases across the Island over the last month and now have more than 30 people in hospital with a Covid-19 diagnosis.

"That might not sound like a huge number and it is certainly less than the peak of the second wave, but it is still around 20% of the total number of beds in St Mary’s Hospital and our teams are under increasing pressure.

"We are also seeing some very sick people in intensive care, many of whom have not been vaccinated.

"Our plea to the Island community is to please keep your guard up.

"You can help us by getting vaccinated if you haven’t already, make sure you get your second jab if you still need it and wear a mask or face covering in crowded places to try and limit the spread of the virus.

"We are here for you but we need your help."
