TWO men burgled one of the Isle of Wight's most popular country pubs.

They broke into the thatched and historic Sun Inn in Hulverstone and stole a safe, later emptying its contents and discarding it.

The police are now investigating the incident, which happened on Monday evening.

A statement from the pub staff said: "We’re saddened to say that on Monday evening we fell victim to a burglary at our beautiful pub.

"Armed with an (axe), two unsavoury individuals (with particularly poor dress sense) smashed their way in and proceeded to steal a safe with our takings along with other items in it.

"The safe was recovered in Shorwell by the shooting club. Needless to say its contents were missing.

"We have lots of CCTV which has been passed to the police.

"The break-in occurred at 11.45pm.

"Thank you as always to our amazing team for dealing with this in their usual positive way. As they say, the show must go on."
