A crew from Lymington Rowing Club will attempt to break three open water rowing speed records next week and they will also row around the Isle of Wight, in an attempt to break another record too.

The four-man crew will aim to be the fastest to row 50 nautical miles and 100 nautical miles and to row the greatest open water distance in 12 hours.

The open water records are currently held by the Russian Federation.

Lymington Rowing Club's challengers are Dave Mans, Alex Gasper, Toby Blackhouse, Rob Maltby and coxswain, Jack Mans.

Dave and Rob are no strangers to Guinness World Records after completing the fastest time to row the length of the Thames in a 2-man boat, in October 2017.

The Challenge 100 rowing record bid is planned for Tuesday, August 24, depending on the weather and will set off from Poole at 6am.

The team aim to be back in Lymington before 10pm, via their circumnavigation of the Island.

With strong currents and an extreme tidal range, the coastal waters around the Isle of Wight are among the most challenging for open water rowing.

The team has been training since January and they are aiming to raise money to support primary schools near the Hampshire town, as well as Lymington Rowing Club (LARC).

The Pier Cafe in Totland Bay is among the companies sponsoring it, along with Bradbeers, The Haven Bar, Bluebird Care and Rowing Adventures Ltd.
