INCLEMENT weather decimated Island cricket at the weekend.

In the Southern Premier League, Ventnor’s fixture against Hartley Wintney was postponed on account of the rain, and in Hampshire League Division 2, Ryde’s game against Shrewton met a similar fate.

But fellow Division 2 Island outfit, Shanklin & Godshill I, crossed the Solent to face South Wiltshire III, losing by 27 runs.

Harry Moore (45) and Freddie Gurney (35) held the Shanklin innings together, but an 88 not out from a South Wiltshire batsman had already contributed to a formidable 216-7.

After bowlers Matt Lambourne (3-26) and Jonah Pope (2-22) endeavoured to limit this sum, the visitors could only muster 189 in response.

Over in Division 4, Ryde II’s home fixture against Southampton Travellers was cancelled.

In Division One of the Island League, Bembridge & Ryde Cavaliers conceded to Northwood, while in Division Two, Ventnor II beat Newport II by 152 runs.

Winning the toss and batting first, the home side posted a formidable total of 254-6 from their 35 overs, despite a couple of rain interruptions.

The innings was built around a superb knock of 136 from Umar Tarar, making a big impression in his first season at Ventnor.

The opening batsman thumped 14 boundaries and, with support from captain Mark Price (42) and Toby Noyes (30), a challenging total was set.

Pick of the Newport bowlers was young Alfie Pease, who took 2-15.

Ash Brett (28) got Newport off to a strong start before the impressive Dominic Brihmani (3-28) pegged the visitors back.

With Souvik Sanyal taking 2-6 from five overs and Morgan Flood 1-8 from seven overs, Newport were restricted to 102-7 by the close, Anthony Rajan (29) and James Haydon (23 not out) top scoring.
